Reasons We Should Talk to Our Children About Taboo Subjects

Host: Teacher Emil
Inspiration for Kids: Educators Podcast

Episode Overview

In this episode, I discuss why it’s so important to have open and honest conversations with children about taboo or difficult subjects. These topics might feel uncomfortable to bring up, but avoiding them can leave children confused, misinformed, or even unsafe.

I explain how talking openly helps children build trust with adults, develop critical thinking skills, and stay safe in different situations. When we approach these conversations thoughtfully and in an age-appropriate way, we help children gain understanding and confidence in themselves and the world around them.

What You’ll Learn

  • Why open discussions about taboo subjects matter
  • How honest communication builds trust between adults and children
  • Ways these conversations support children’s critical thinking
  • Strategies for keeping children safe through awareness and knowledge
  • Tips for adapting the conversation to a child’s age and developmental stage

Try These Exercises

To help you put these ideas into practice, here are three activities you can try:

1. Trust Talk Time
Set aside regular time to have one-on-one conversations with children about topics they might find difficult or confusing. Use this time to listen carefully and show that their thoughts and feelings are valued.

2. Critical Thinking Questions
When discussing a taboo subject, ask open-ended questions like, “What do you think about this?” or “Why do you think this happens?” This encourages children to think deeply and express their ideas.

3. Safety Scenarios
Create simple, age-appropriate scenarios related to safety (such as “What would you do if…”) to help children practice awareness and decision-making in a supportive setting.
